Make homemade ice cream right in a plastic bag with this fast and fun science experiment. It is an easy entertainment activity for kids using just ice, salt, and cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup Half and Half or whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 3 cups Ice cubes
  • 1/3 cup Coarse salt (rock salt works best)
  • 1 small sealable plastic bag (quart size)
  • 1 large sealable plastic bag (gallon size)
  • Gloves or a towel (for handling the cold bag)

Instructions

  1. In the small plastic bag, combine the half and half, sugar, and vanilla extract. Seal the small bag tightly, pressing out excess air.
  2. Fill the large plastic bag halfway with ice cubes.
  3. Pour the coarse salt over the ice in the large bag.
  4. Place the sealed small bag inside the large bag filled with ice and salt. Seal the large bag securely.
  5. Wrap the large bag in a towel or put on gloves. Shake the bag vigorously for 5 to 7 minutes.
  6. Check the small bag. The mixture should have solidified into ice cream.
  7. Carefully remove the small bag from the ice bath. Wipe the outside of the small bag thoroughly to remove any salt residue before opening.
  8. Open the small bag and enjoy your homemade ice cream.

Notes

  • Using rock salt lowers the freezing point of the ice, which chills the cream mixture faster.
  • If you do not have rock salt, table salt works, but you may need to shake the bag for a longer time.
  • For cleaner eating, you can scoop the finished ice cream into a bowl instead of eating directly from the bag.
